When it was over, both coaches came close to tears. Auburn's Pat
Dye read a letter from a veteran of Patton's 9th Army to his players
before the game and later said the emotion from that lifelong War
Eagle fan "may have given us that extra spark we needed."
Alabama's Bill Curry, seeing a splendid season seemingly washed
away in one afternoon, almost couldn't get the words out to describe
the pleasure this team had given him.
Unfortunately for Curry, what the Crimson Tide still hasn't given
him is a victory over Auburn and it didn't come close this afternoon
in a 30-20 loss in front of a record 85,319 roaring fans at
Jordan-Hare Stadium.
