Article: Redlands PD boosts Air Support Unit with Cessna 172

If you've ever wondered where some of the money from drug seizures goes, Redlands Police Department has come up with a new scheme.

By a vote of 4 to 1 the Redlands City Council approved March 20 the spending of $185,000 to boost their Air Support Unit.

Based at Redlands Airport, the Department has a Cessna 172 recently purchased to assist in a variety of law enforcement duties. The unit will be used for surveillance, observation and assisting in patrols and pursuit.

"The plane has a special kit, which allows it to fly at lower speeds," said Carl Baker, the public information officer for the Department. "A fixed wing aircraft is also a lot cheaper to maintain than a helicopter."
