When Kent Hrbek and agent Ron Simon sat down to discuss the
nitty-gritty of a new contract last spring, their goal was this: $4
million over two years.
Hrbek told Simon he'd like to be a $2-million-a-year player,
which seemed reasonable enough for a hometown hero who had averaged
25 home runs and 90 RBI in his first five big league seasons.
The Minnesota Twins said a firm no, and while Hrbek was having
his usual big season-25 home runs and 84 RBI-he believed he might not
be a $2 million man, at least not in the Twin Cities.
What he didn't know was that in the weeks after the 1989 season,
baseball's earth would move, and before it could settle, would move
again and again and again.
