Article: Soviet Union Raises Readiness of Forces In East Germany

The Soviet Union has raised readiness of some military forces in East Germany, apparently out of concern for safety of Soviet bases and nuclear weapons depots amid the growing political instabilities in that country, U.S. military officials said yesterday.

The officials emphasized that they did not believe the move signals any intention by Moscow to prepare to intervene militarily while the East German government remains in turmoil.

They said the Soviets instead appeared to be readying some elements of their forces to defend themselves and their equipment, including Soviet nuclear weapons stored in East Germany, against possible hostile activities by local citizens.
