A push by Friendship Heights residents to block a liquor license
for a new Embassy Suites Hotel has sparked another battle with a
developer that won a major rezoning in the neighborhood several years
ago. But this time the residents hold the advantage.
Behind them stands a new law that empowers a neighborhood to
block a liquor license by gathering a petition of voter signatures.
Although no petition has yet been issued, the 150 closest neighbors
to the hotel will have the final say, and leaders of both sides say
they will canvass them hard to win them over.
