Much as it did in the early '60s, Brazilian pop music is winning
a lot of new listeners in America these days, thanks largely to the
popularity of composers such as Milton Nascimento and Djavan. But
there aren't many American bands that perform the music with as much
verve and affection as Deborah Benner and Tropic of Capricorn.
At Blues Alley last night, Benner's voice and smile fairly
radiated the joyful spirit common to so much Brazilian pop. Singing
