Gardeners who start their own seedlings under lights should be in
full operation by now. It's not an idle moment too soon, either,
because broccoli, cabbage and lettuce plants should be six weeks old
or older before they go into the ground, and that can be as early as
the first of April. For earliest tomato production, plants can go
out under protection by mid-April after they also are at least six
weeks old. And it's just about time, too, to start pepper, eggplant
and melon plants indoors.
While starting your own seedlings indoors is relatively easy,
two problems are frequently encountered-poor germination and spindly
seedlings. There are many possible causes for these conditions.
