Not often does the typical supermarket shopper find shelves lined
with canned squid in its own ink, octopus in olive oil, potato starch
and green pigeon peas, or refrigerated cases filled with cow's feet,
beef tripe and goat legs.
But off Columbia Pike near Lake Barcroft in Fairfax county,
Americana Grocery of Virginia sells these exotic foods, catering to
the growing African community in Northern Virginia.
Some items at americana usually are found only in expensive
gourmet shops. Next to potato starch, palm nut concentrate and the
guava marmalade stands the very gastronomic Colombian chocolate,
which melts into a cocoa-rich milk drink. At this store, however,
