Former secretary of state Henry A. Kissinger recommended at a
private gathering recently that Israel prohibit television reporters
and cameras from the violence-torn occupied territories and that the
Palestinian uprisings be suppressed "brutally and rapidly," according
to a memo paraphrasing his remarks.
The memo said Kissinger emphasized repeatedly that under no
circumstances should Israel make concessions during the current
period of violence.
Kissinger also argued that "the insurrection must be quelled
immediately, and the first step should be to throw out television, a
la South Africa. To be sure, there will be international criticism
of the step, but it will dissipate in short order. ...
