Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, boxed in by home-state
favorites when he would like to break away from the crowded
Democratic pack, began airing a television commercial today that
warns Illinois voters they have a choice of voting for the "next
president" or a "brokered convention" in Tuesday's primary here.
The commercial is designed to undercut efforts of Sen. Paul Simon
(D-Ill.) to ask his home-state voters to keep his faltering candidacy
alive in hopes that he can play a brokering role or emerge as a
compromise nominee at the Democratic National Convention next July in
Atlanta.
