Pham Hung, 75, the premier of Vietnam and the guerrilla leader
who headed the Vietnamese communist movement in South Vietnam in the
war against the United States in the 1960s and '70s, died of a heart
attack Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City, Radio Hanoi announced today.
Mr. Hung, who had spent considerable time in the Soviet Union in
recent years being treated for heart and kidney ailments, served as
premier for less than nine months. He was elected to the post by the
country's National Assembly last June, replacing premier Pham Van
Dong, who had held the job for more than three decades.
