In the end, Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) tried to save his waning
presidential campaign by slamming his main rival's media strategy. "I
offer you not a 30-second commercial," intoned the bow-tied favorite
son who couldn't afford to buy air time. "I offer you 30 years of
commitment to the people."
But against difficult odds, it was a 30-second commercial from
Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, running third in the polls as
he challenged Simon for the votes of white Democrats, that broke
through the clutter of festive parades, flaming ethnic delicacies and
throngs of admirers, most of them black, cheering for Jesse L.
Jackson.
