Leaders of many major religious denominations yesterday accused
the Rev. Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority of "distortions" and "scare
tactics" in its campaign to get Congress to sustain President
Reagan's veto of civil rights legislation.
The groups, including the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops,
major Jewish organizations and many large Protestant denominations,
reiterated their support for the legislation, criticized Reagan for
vetoing it and said they will attempt to rally their members to
support the drive in Congress to override the veto.
