When Prince George's school administrator David Lemmond proposed
two years ago that a Humanities and International Studies high school
magnet program be established, he stressed the need for a broad
liberal arts education that would include intensive instruction in
history, literature, art, music, geography and foreign languages, as
well as math and science.
That curriculum is now in place at Central High School in Capitol
Heights, but although it is the program's greatest strength, it has
also been the source of some confusion to the students and their
