Edgar Faure, 79, one of France's most respected statesmen and a
politician who occupied every important government post except the
presidency in a career that spanned a half-century, died today at
Leannec Hospital here. He had undergone surgery in the past two
months for ailments of the pancreas, stomach and liver.
In a statement issued by the Elysee Palace, President Francois
Mitterrand called Mr. Faure, a fellow socialist, "a remarkable man
who marked the history of our Republic. He was one of the most lucid
{men}, envisaging the need for decolonization, promoting disarmament
and better East-West relations."
