Article: Panel Urges More Spending For Mentally Ill

The federal government's effort to help the mentally ill is inefficient and underfunded, according to a congressional report released Sunday.

Although some $73 billion is spent annually on mental illness, federal funds are often "wasted on services that are inappropriate, ineffective and fragmented," the report concluded.

Called "From Back Wards to Back Streets: The Failure of the Federal Government in Providing Services for the Mentally Ill," the report details results of an investigation by the House subcommittee on human resources and intergovernmental relations, chaired by Rep. Ted Weiss (D-N.Y.).
