Article: Getting Over This City

JUST HOW high can you go in Washington? I've been riding a lot of elevators lately to find out. The obvious answer, the Washington Monument, is wrong, because the National Cathedral, by virtue of being built on a hill (Mount Saint Albans is higher.

Despite the Cathedral's panoramic splendor, I remain partial to the Monument. I'm not sure why. One friend insists it's because there's a strong family resemblance - beanpole must be in the genes. I think it's because the Monument is deliberately tall, unlike the Cathedral, which is incidentally tall on its way to becoming gorgeous and sacred.

Besides, the Monument's observation deck is almost five times as tall as the Cathedral's - 500 feet ...
