Article: Benoit Won't Compete In Marathon Trials

Joan Benoit, winner of the first women's Olympic marathon in 1984, likely will not run in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials, her coach said yesterday.

"There is a real slim chance, but we're looking at 99 percent that she won't run," Bob Sevene told the Associated Press. "Of course, she would like to run, but I find it hard to conceive that she will run."

Sevene said that Benoit "blew her back out about eight weeks ago, and she has had this long-range problem with her hip, where there's an imbalance that effects her left side."

The trials will be held May 1 in Pittsburgh, and organizers there had been counting on Benoit, ...
