Joan Benoit, winner of the first women's Olympic marathon in
1984, likely will not run in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials, her
coach said yesterday.
"There is a real slim chance, but we're looking at 99 percent
that she won't run," Bob Sevene told the Associated Press. "Of
course, she would like to run, but I find it hard to conceive that
she will run."
Sevene said that Benoit "blew her back out about eight weeks ago,
and she has had this long-range problem with her hip, where there's
an imbalance that effects her left side."
The trials will be held May 1 in Pittsburgh, and organizers there
had been counting on Benoit, ...
