Jesse L. Jackson's top strategists launched a belated effort
today to seek the support of the 646 "superdelegates" to the
Democratic National Convention, contending that party candidates
would do best with Jackson atop the ticket.
Jackson has made only informal efforts to court superdelegates,
who may hold the key to the Democratic presidential nomination, and
trails his chief rival, Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, by
about 3 to 1 among the critical group of party leaders.
"We have been waiting patiently until such time we really had
something to market," said California House Speaker Willie Brown,
