THERE is nothing Barbara Allbutt would like more than a cheese
sandwich - but just that one lunch could cause her untold problems
because she is lactose intolerant. A more common problem than many
realise, there are thousands of people in the UK who cannot eat
produce that contain lactose such as milk, cheese, butter and cream.
But that is only the tip of the iceberg because Barbara cannot eat
any product which has lactose as an ingredient - ruling out hundreds
of foods from biscuits and cakes in the supermarket to mash and
cottage pie in the pub.
Lactose, which is found naturally in milk, can be labelled under
countless other names, but whatever its label it is a food which
