Poland's communist authorities began a commemoration of the 1943
Jewish ghetto uprising today, with the participation of thousands of
visitors from Israel and the United States and a dose of the
controversy that habitually characterizes Polish-Jewish affairs.
About 1,000 Jewish youth from Israel and other countries staged a
"march of the living" around the former Auschwitz death camp near
Krakow, and a symposium on Poles and Jews began in Warsaw. The
program will continue through Tuesday, the 45th anniversary of the
uprising by ghetto survivors against occupying Nazi forces. The
