MORE than pounds 450,000 has now been handed over by people convicted of fare dodging on the region's trains since a new "name and shame" policy was introduced.

In September a total of 183 were fined by magistrates for travelling without a valid ticket on Central Trains services, including those from south Birmingham.

They paid out around pounds 35,000 in fines, costs and compensation after being convicted in court.

On average, those convicted ended up paying ten times more than their ticket would have cost.

Now more than 2,000 people have been prosecuted since March 2005, and they have had the added shame of having their names plastered around the region. The names of the latest people ...
