Spirit of Place
ANYONE familiar with what little there is of a genunine literary
scene in Washington must certainly take exception to John Greenya's
glowing hyped-up report on Washington as a "literary boom town" (Book
World, March 6).
As he makes clear in his report, Greenya regards a literary boom
as essentially the number of fat advances awarded to gossips,
celebrity journalists and other non-writers in this town. On the
evidence that Greenya places on big bucks from publishers, one is
left with the impression that no one is worth his salt unless he or
she has received a contract in six figures. Consider some of the
phrases Greenya seems to relish: "nonfiction blockbuster," "largest ...
