The Maryland Racing Commission yesterday deferred a decision on
the exchange of racing dates between Laurel and Pimlico pending a
special public hearing in Baltimore next month.
The commission also postponed judgment on the adoption of
regulations that would allow Arabian horses to race at Laurel on a
restricted, experimental basis beginning this fall. The Arabian
issue drew stout opposition from Maryland's thoroughbred horsemen and
dominated a session that lasted more than four hours.
Frank De Francis and Bob and Tom Manfuso, owners of both Pimlico
and Laurel, requested that Laurel's June 1-July 5 dates be
transferred to Pimlico while Laurel's racing surface is rebuilt.
