The New York Democratic primary provided a lot of the country
with interesting, even startling views on that state's down and dirty
politics. But for many of us, the most enduring image will not be of
a raving, ranting New York Mayor Edward I. Koch, who managed to lose
what crumb of credibility he had left. It will be the image of Jesse
L. Jackson's unwavering dignity and courage in the face of intense
racial hatred and unforgiveness from many white and Jewish New
Yorkers, and of media bias, even yellow journalism.
That Jackson won New York City in the face of incredible odds-and
assassination threats-was tremendous. That he won 15 percent of the
white vote and 8 percent of the Jewish ...
