Article: 4-Star Gen. Paul Freeman Dies; Commanded Army in Europe

Paul L. Freeman, 80, a retired four-star Army general and highly decorated combat infantry officer who had served in World War II and in the Korean war, died of an aneurysm April 17 at a hospital in Monterey, Calif. He lived in Carmel, Calif.

He was commander-in-chief of the U.S. Army in Europe and commander of NATO's Central Army Group from 1962 to 1965. He then spent two years as commanding general of the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe, Va., before retiring from active duty in 1967.

When the Korean war broke out in 1950, Gen. Freeman, then a colonel, had just taken command of the 2nd Infantry Division's 23rd Infantry Regiment. He sailed with his regiment for Korea in July 1950, ...
