Maryland racing fans have seen many memorable spectacles over the
years: Secretariat vs. Sham, Kelso vs. Mongo, Alysheba vs. Bet Twice.
And soon, if Frank De Francis gets his way, we may get to watch
Flaming Tron Ku vs. Mhr El Hamad.
The president of Laurel and Pimlico wants to offer races for
Arabian horses on an experimental basis. His proposal may have
seemed innocuous and quirky when he first made it, but the issue has
turned into a jihad, a hot controversy pitting thoroughbred horsemen
against management. Horsemen opposed the idea so vehemently at the
Maryland Racing Commission's hearing Wednesday that the commission
deferred its decision.
