With only a few strokes of a pen, Citizens Bancorp last week
broke with the past and ended a costly and odious chapter in the
history of the Riverdale company. Three years after being sued by
the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and fully 10 years after
being accused of discrimination in hiring and promotion practices,
Citizens signed a consent decree, ending the EEOC lawsuit.
Citizens denied, as it always has, that it ever engaged in any
practice that may have violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or
other laws barring discrimination.
The fact that Citizens agreed to a settlement while still not
admitting to any wrongdoing shouldn't detract from the significance
