Lady Walton, Looking Back on a Dream
Lady Walton had the most tiresome time with her libel lawyers. You
know what they're like, of course.
"You can't say that," they would say.
"But why not? He makes no secret of all his good-looking
boyfriends."
Then she had another kind friend, besides the libel lawyers, who
pointed out nobody wanted to read a book by her.
"They want a book about your distinguished husband, Sir William
Walton," he said. The friend wrote a new draft. Such friends are
such a joy to a writer. She hit the ceiling when she saw the revised
version.
"You can't send the new version to Oxford Press," she said.
"I'll have to rewrite it. I am just an ignorant woman, but ...
