The Japanese Shore
When the summer's heat and humidity descend on Tokyo, those who
can-from Emperor Hirohito on down-flee this concrete city, heading
either for the crispness of nearby mountain towns, such as Karuizawa,
or the cool breezes of the beaches south of Tokyo.
Last summer, when the mercury here soared even beyond
Washington's, we chose the coastline, and in the process discovered
such typically Japanese phenomena as standing-room-only beaches and
bathing Japanese-style.
One weekend morning we and thousands of other early risers
boarded a train from Tokyo Station for the seaside town of Kamakura,
