Article: AIDS Virus Found to Infect Bone Marrow

The virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome has
been shown to infect the bone marrow cells that give rise to many
types of blood cells, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, reported yesterday.
This discovery helps explain why some AIDS patients suffer any of
a variety of blood disorders, Fauci said.
While researchers had long suspected that bone marrow cells could
be infected by the AIDS virus, it was only recently that Fauci, Dr.
Thomas Folks in NIAID's Laboratory of Immunoregulation and others
were able to purify precursor, or progenitor, bone marrow cells and
prove it.
