The sign behind Nicholas Girardi's desk says, "All we need is an
ear to listen, an eye to behold, and a heart to feel." To Girardi,
the principal at Cedar Lane School, this philosophy is particularly
applicable to special education.
There are 208 mentally retarded students ranging in age from 6 to
21 attending school at Cedar Lane. "No two children are alike," said
Girardi, "which is why special education in particular is so
challenging. You're dealing with a unique set of problems with each
child." Cedar Lane students benefit from Girardi's background in
special education and developmental disabilities, as well as his
position on the Board of Directors of Maryland's Special Olympics.
