You have heard on various television stations, if you ever watch
their news programs, that we shall as usual go from dreadful winter
smack into dreadful summer without any spring.
Such profound ignorance is no longer shocking, of course, but I
do wonder how anybody can fail to notice the Washington spring-the
past six weeks or so-or get it confused with winter.
Probably it's because they know nothing of winter, either. Back
to spring, it begins in late March, technically, but as far as
gardeners are concerned it begins in late February when crocuses
bloom and snowdrops finish blooming.
Recently our spring temperatures have run about 10 degrees lower
than the normal for this time of ...
