Article: 4 Boycott Session of P.G. Council;Members Cite Anger At Schools Chief

Four members of the Prince George's County Council boycotted a budget work session with the county school board yesterday because they were angry that Superintendent John A. Murphy chose not to attend.

Council member Sue V. Mills said she and three other members declined to go because they believed Murphy should have been there to defend the school board's $477.7 million budget request for next year.

"He's the head of the department and he should have been there," Mills said. "I think the only excuse not to be there is death, preferably your own."

Murphy, who returned from Salt Lake City yesterday afternoon, said later that he did not know the council wanted him to attend the session.
