A GIRLS' school in Birmingham is looking to the future as it brings its 50th anniversary celebrations to a close.

Swanshurst School has been operating on its site in Brook Lane, Billesley, since September 1956, when it began life as a girls' grammar.

Government inspectors who visited the 1,800-pupil school last year reported that it was continuing to improve, boosted by obtaining specialist science status in 2003.

Those improvements have seen a steady rise in Swanshurst's exam results, including its benchmark five or more A* to C grades at GCSE soaring from 56 per cent to 69 per cent over the last two years.
