France's new prime minister, saying he has no written record to
go on, declared today he is unsure what the preceding government
pledged to Iran in return for intervention to free three French
hostages in Beirut.
Prime Minister Michel Rocard, in a carefully worded statement,
said he will honor commitments made to Iran under former prime
minister Jacques Chirac only as far as they are known. These include
restoration of diplomatic relations and settlement of the remaining
part of France's longstanding debt to Iran within renewed commercial
ties, he said.
