Article: D.C. Rooming Houses Feel Agency Crackdown; Nearly 100 Inspected, Four Shut Down

District housing officials have inspected nearly 100 rooming houses and levied more than $37,000 in fines since a fire in one of them killed three children March 31.

The sweep by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is part of a plan to inspect all of the city's more than 300 such facilities. So far, four rooming houses have been shut down because inspectors found life-threatening conditions.

Diana Haines, chief of the agency's Office of Compliance, said inspectors are being guided by a computerized list of rooming houses in the district compiled from licensing records and complaints filed by residents.
