Two widely acknowledged masters of modern architecture, Gordon
Bunshaft of the United States and Oscar Niemeyer of Brazil, have been
selected to share the 1988 Pritzker Architecture Prize. The awards,
carrying a $100,000 grant divided equally between the laureates, will
be presented today at the Art Institute of Chicago.
"The sharing of the prize is unprecedented," said Bill Lacy,
secretary to the jury, in an official statement, "but entirely
warranted as a tribute to architects from North and South America
whose work has had worldwide influence in this century, and doubtless
