Article: Autism Linked to Brain Defect; Part of Cerebellum Abnormally Small in Victims of Behavior Disorder

A new study of autistic people shows that one part of the cerebellum, the lower rear part of the brain that helps control balance and coordination, is often much smaller than normal, suggesting that abnormal brain development may explain the mysterious behavior disorder.

Autism, which affects about one in 2,000 people, is a disabling condition that severely impairs the ability to learn to speak and to interact socially. About 75 percent of autistic individuals are also mentally retarded, but even those of normal intelligence usually require constant supervision throughout their lives.
