Editor's note: This is the first of two parts. The second, a trip
to Yosemite, will appear next week. Lake Tahoe may seem like it has a
bit of an identity crisis.
Here you can explore nature, hike along the pristine lake while
enjoying spectacular mountain views and feel like you're in the
middle of nowhere at times.
But just a few miles down the road, you're dropped into a beehive
of activity: shops, hotels, restaurants. Play a round of golf or
indulge in a massage at one of the many spas.
And that's only on the California side.
At a fairly non-descript intersection, suddenly you're in Nevada
and the casinos lure with their slot machines, blackjack tables and
