Want to spend a day in the past?
Just drive about an hour into the desert from Lake Tahoe and visit
Virginia City, a place that seems almost frozen in time. To get here,
we drove along a highway propped up on both sides by desert, then
climbed a mountain. Our rental car huffed and puffed up and down the
steep curves, most without guardrails, spotting horses grazing, homes
periodically dotting the sparse landscape.
Driving into town, we felt like we were on a movie set because the
main street, called C Street, is the largest federally designated
Historical District in the country and it's lined with storefronts
reminiscent of the Wild West.
Fire almost destroyed Virginia City in 1875, but ...
