Mike Austin was at his Massachusetts home last summer reading his
Yale alumni newsletter when he saw a familiar name in a snippet.
Steve Clark, a teammate on the Yale swim team in the early 1960s and
member of the Class of 1964, had donated his gold medal to the
university, which put it on display in the Kiphuth Trophy Room at
Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
Austin, 64, and Clark were on the same victorious 4x400 relay team
in the 1964 Summer Olympics at Tokyo. Yale's Don Schollander was also
on the squad.
"I thought 'Why didn't I think of that?'" Austin said.
Austin made the same gesture Saturday when he donated his gold
medal, presenting it to Yale director of athletics Tom Beckett in a
ceremony ...
