Article: Fleeting relief; Storm batters some towns, but high heat lingers; More wicked humidity likely today

A powerful thunderstorm stomped across parts of Greater New Haven Tuesday evening, causing swaths of damage and power outages, but bringing little relief from the dangerous heat that is expected to keep the region in its grip at least through today. Greater New Haven and much of New England sweltered in 90-degree and higher temperatures Tuesday, and energy consumption hit record levels as people struggled to stay cool.

Later, the line of thunderstorms, wind and rain that bombarded parts of the region, flooding some streets, leveled trees and tore down tree branches and knocked out power to thousands of consumers.
