With many people making New Year's resolutions today, it's a good time for consumers to take stock of their financial standing and take steps to improve in 2007, according to financial planners. Paying off holiday debt, borrowing smartly and saving should top consumers' list of financial resolutions in the New Year, said William Saas, principal of Saas Kirwan Associates in Wallingford.

"Get rid of that debt," he said, adding that recovering from holiday expenses is the first step in gaining financial stability in the New Year.
