Among Americans living and working in the occupied West Bank, few
are closer to the scenes of persecution endured by Palestinian
villagers than Nancy Nye. The 41-year-old Ohioan teaches their
children. Nyes, who has a master's degree in education and speaks
Arabic fluently, is the headmistress of the 550-student Friends Girls
School in Ramallah, about 10 miles north of Jerusalem.
By order of the Israeli government, the Quaker school, which is
affiliated with Friends United Meeting in Richmond, Ind., was closed
