Two University of Maryland professors have persuaded Samuel
Beckett to preserve his vision of his work by directing for the first
time his three most famous plays for television. Production of
English and French versions of "Waiting for Godot," "Endgame" and
"Krapp's Last Tape" will begin in Paris in September, with release of
the first play on videotape expected next summer.
Even Roman Polanski, not a man one imagines as easily surprised,
was stunned when he heard.
"I went to Beckett to ask to do a movie of `Godot' and he said
no!" Polanski told the professors when asked if he would like a part
in the play. "How did you buggers get the rights?"
