The middle of Day Avenue became a veterinary emergency room Tuesday as firefighters worked to resuscitate four pets they had rescued from a burning apartment.

No humans were injured in the fire, but one dog and three cats suffered smoke inhalation. The animals eventually perked up for firefighters, who held oxygen masks over their noses.

Roanoke Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Bobbie Slayton said the apartment building at 618 Day Ave. S.W. was evacuated about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when firefighters responded to a 911 call and found a downstairs apartment on fire.
