The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings," goes the memorable
line immortalized a few years ago by Dick Motta, the coach of the
Washington Bullets. Well, the fat lady sang on Tuesday-for Michael
Dukakis.
But just as Jesse L. Jackson has rewritten the rules in many
other aspects of this campaign, he's rewritten those lines of Motta's
as well. The fat lady has sung-but the game still isn't over.
Dukakis has locked up the nomination, true enough, but in
practical terms, Jackson and Dukakis are still running, and the
Dukakis-Jackson ticket will remain alive and well until such issues
as a running mate, Jackson's role in the general election and the
party platform are settled. Thus, say ...
