I receive a lot of correspondence about Civil War ancestors. The letters are fascinating and I try to include as many of them as I can when I write my columns.

But I also get many questions that ask for information about finding a Civil War ancestor when all the writer has is a name and maybe an inkling of where the person lived. This presents problems and I have generally suggested that the writer make friends with his or her local librarian.
