Elon University and the Southern Conference took the first
tentative step Tuesday in a courtship dance that could end with Elon
replacing VMI as the league's 12th competitive member as early as the
2003-04 school year.
Elon was visited by a 14-person delegation led by conference
commissioner Danny Morrison and including at least one representative
from every current member except VMI.
"It's no secret that there has been a mutual interest between the
Southern Conference and Elon in recent months," said Alan White,
Elon's athletics director. "It's a prestigious conference that
anybody in our situation would be proud to be affiliated with, and
it's certainly the premier Division I-AA football ...
